I see these two phrases (student visa and study permit) used all the time, are they the same?

No, a study permit and a student visa are not the same.

A study permit allows you to study in a foreign country – like engage in academic activities, while a student visa is a travel document that allows you to enter the issuing country.

For example, in Canada, the study permit authorizes yu to study in the country, but a student visa or eTA is what you need to enter the country.

Without a student visa, you can’t enter the country likewise if you have a student visa and enter with it but you don’t have a study permit, you can’t study or engage in academic activities.

For countries like the USA where you have only a student visa, it often combines both study and entry permissions in one document.
