Can I work while waiting for study permit extension?

  • 0

I applied for a study permit extension, am I allowed to continue working while waiting for a decision on my application?

  1. Yes, you can work. If your original study permit allowed you to work and you applied for its extension before your current permit expired, you’ll have maintained status (formerly known as implied status). This means you can continue to study and work under the same conditions as your original permit until a decision is made on the extension application.

  2. When I was waiting for my study permit extension, I found out that I could keep working as long as I had applied for the extension before my current permit expired. This meant I had “implied status” and could continue working. If you applied for the extension before the current permit expires, you can continue working.

  3. While waiting for my study permit extension in Canada, I was allowed to continue working but it was under the same conditions as my expiring permit, I worked until a decision was made on my application.

However, I kept a copy of my extension application and proof of submission while working. This allowed me to show my employer that I was legally permitted to work while my extension was being processed.
