Requirements for international passport in Nigeria

The requirements for adults and minors aren’t the same – a passport application for a minor requires a parental consent form and a few other details which you don’t need if you’re an adult.

International passport requirements for adults in Nigeria (18 years and above)

As an adult applicant, you need the following for your international passport application in Nigeria.

1. Letter of Identification

  • This letter is important – and you can get it from your:
    • Local Government/State of Origin or Residence: Your letter of identification can come from your local government or state of residence – it’s simply to confirm your identity.
    • National Identity Card: If you can’t get the letter of identification from your state or local government, provide your National Identity Card – it will serve as proof of your citizenship and identification.
    • Letter of introduction for government employees: Alternatively, if you work for the government, you can get a letter stating your service number, length of service, and designation/rank. If you’re using this letter, include your valid staff identity card.

When I applied, I opted for a letter of identification from my local government – it’s easier to get and once you get it, you can use it for other things.

When I got mine, it was straightforward but I had to visit my local government to get it.

2. Completed passport application form

    • The application form is compulsory. You can find it on the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) portal. You’re required to fill out the form and submit it with other requirements. When filling it, make sure all your details are accurate to avoid delays. I double-checked mine after filling out the form, and it paid off—no corrections were needed later.

4. Marriage Certificate (if you’re married)

    • If you’re married, provide your marriage certificate.

5. Birth Certificate or Age declaration

    • If you’re an applicant born after December 1992: You need to include your birth certificate and it must be issued by the National Population Commission (NPC).
    • If you’re an older applicant: You need to include an age declaration, and it must be attached with one passport-sized photograph and endorsed by a Commissioner for Oaths.

6. Acknowledgement slip and evidence of payment

    • You know you have to pay for the passport right? Good. You can check the current passport price for your passport category by clicking here.
    • After completing your application form online, you’ll receive an acknowledgement slip. Submit this, along with your evidence of payment.

Your passport application will not be finalized if your evidence of payment is not included in your application.

During mine, I printed the evidence of payment and attached it to my application.
