You probably have heard about how moving to the United States of America is now harder than before due to the recent immigration policy changes made by Donald Trump.

I can assure you that, it is true. However, I bring you good news, while the US is shutting its door on us, Canada is opening their door wider for Nigerians and other Africans.

But, it is only for those who are serious and are ready to work or study when they arrive in Canada.

If you want to enter Canada for tourism alone, this is not for you, but if you want to work, study or do business in Canada, then this opportunity is for you.

And, please, stop ruling yourself out of every relocation opportunity, the fact that it didn’t work for someone you know does not mean it won’t work for you.

People are consistently migrating to Canada from Nigeria. Go and check, there are over 30,000 Nigerians who are currently studying in Canada.

I am talking about those who are studying alone, not those who are there for work or other things.

See the evidence below.

screenshot of Google search result showing number of Nigerians studying in Canada

37,630 Nigerians are currently studying in Canada. You don’t have a reason to believe that you can’t successfully migrate to Canada from Nigeria.

If it has worked for others – over 37,000 persons, it can work for you. Yes, over thirty thousand Nigerians are now studying in Canada. Google it and you will see for yourself.

This is something you should try, at least, there is no harm in trial. But, I must warn you; it is not easy to migrate to Canada from Nigeria, so prepare your mind to read and follow the instructions below.

How you can immigrate to Canada from Nigeria with a visa sponsorship

As a Nigerian, there are many ways to migrate to Canada, you can go through Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), Study Permit, Start-up Visa Program or even the Self-Employed Persons Program.

But all of these programs are hard to get through especially for us Nigerians, except for the Agri-Food Pilot and the Caregiver Programs.

The Canadian authorities modified these two pathways (the Agri-Food Pilot and the Caregiver Programs) recently and it is now easier for people including Nigerians to migrate to Canada through them.

Through this pathway, many Nigerians have recently successfully moved to Canada and hopefully, soon they will become Permanent residents.

You too can apply through these two programs. Aside from them and study pathways, other pathways are not easy to migrate to Canada from Nigeria.

Another amazing thing about these two programs is that they come with visa sponsorship, especially if you are willing to work with a sponsoring Canadian agency.

If you want to get started, let’s look at each program, how they work and how you can follow them to migrate to Canada this year.

As I said above, these two programs have worked for many Nigerians so far. At least one of them should work for you.

  • Option 1: Agri-Food Pilot program (For farm & Food processing workers)

If you want to relocate to Canada from Nigeria, this is one of the programs you should go through.

This program is very popular now and many are moving to Canada from Nigeria through it.

I have already showed you the number of people that have migrated through study permit, the number that have relocated through this program is even higher.

This particular program is for anyone who knows anything about farming or foodstuff – like if you can work where they are growing crops, raising chickens, removing fruits, cutting meat and so on.

Canada needs workers for this, so you will come and work for two years if you do not commit any crime, you can then apply to stay permanently.

I know you will not commit any crime when you get to Canada, so, getting PR will not be hard for you – after two years, you can apply for that one.

What do you need to relocate to Canada from Nigeria through this Agri-Food Pilot program?

To migrate to Canada through this program, you need:

  • Experience: The experience we are talking about is that you must have worked on a farm before. Like at a poultry farm or meat factory in Nigeria or anything that relates to a farm. Even if you haven’t, you should know something about farming, even how to collect fruits.
  • A Job Offer: You also need a job offer from a Canadian farm owner or be willing to work with an agency in Canada.
  • School: This opportunity is for people that have at least WAEC or something like it. Your result will be checked with an ECA.
  • English or French: You also need a basic understanding of English or French. If you cannot speak English, you must be able to speak French.
  • Clean criminal record: Finally, make sure you don’t have criminal records in Nigeria.

How to migrate to Canada from Nigeria through the Agri-Food Pilot program

Now that you understand the eligibility requirements of this program, it is time to show you how to apply for it.

To apply:

Step 1: Check if you are eligible for the program

The first thing you should do is to check if you are eligible for this program, there is no need to apply if you are not eligible for it.

To be eligible, you must:

      • Have at least 1 year of work experience in anything farming or know anything about farming.
      • Have a job offer
      • Be able to speak either basic English or French.
      • Have at least a WAEC or NECO certificate. Your certificate will need an ECA (Education Credential Assessment).
      • You must be willing to move to Canada.

There is no need to apply if royu are not willing to move to Canada at the moment.

Step 2: Get a Job in Canada

Of course to work in Canada, you need a Canadian employer to hire you in one of the eligible jobs (examples: farmworker, food processor, butcher, livestock worker).

There are offers everywhere if you will take some time and do a little search online.

Step 3: Apply for a visa

When you get a job offer, the employer will get an LMIA showing that no Canadian could fill the job.

You will be given the job offer letter containing the LMIA. With it, you can apply for a work permit/work visa.

Step 3: Get your visa

After submitting your visa application, you will wait for the authorities to go through it and decide on it.

If it is approved ( and it will be approved because of the offer letter), you’ll then be prepared to travel to Canada to start work.

Example of how the Agri-Food Pilot works

      • Kelvin, a Nigerian man, gets a job offer from a poultry farm in Alberta to work as a livestock worker.
      • He applies for a work permit, moves to Canada, and works full-time for one year.
      • After 1 year, he applies for permanent residency through the Agri-Food Pilot and stays in Canada permanently.

Why is this program very cool?

        • It is easier
        • You can stay permanently after one or two years.
        • You don’t need to be a university graduate to apply.
        • You don’t need to wait years before you get approval.
        • Approval is very fast through this program.

  • Option 2: Canada’s Caregiver Program (Home Child Care & Home Support Worker Pilots)

This is another program through which you can relocate to Canada from Nigeria. This program works well too, but it is for certain kind of persons.

This program is for people who are good at taking care of children, elderly people, or people who need help.

If you are not good at this, then, there is no need to apply. The good thing about this particular program is that Canada has two other programs under it, they have:

  • Home Child Care Provider Pilot
  • And, the Home Support Worker Pilot.

With this program, you can work in Canada and become a permanent resident after a few years.

What do you need to relocate to Canada from Nigeria via this Caregiver program?

The requirements for this program and that of the other program we discussed above are almost the same thing.

Like the previous one, you need:

      • Work experience: At least 1 year of work experience taking care of someone, a child, an elderly person or someone who needs help.
      • Ability to speak English language: You must be able to communicate in English language
      • School certificate: You need at least a WAEC certificate. It will be checked (via an ECA) to show it’s good enough.
      • A Job offer: A family or someone in Canada will offer you a job to come work in Canada.
      • No criminal record: If you have a criminal record, this is not for you, Canada doesn’t want someone who has a criminal record.

How to migrate to Canada from Nigeria through the Caregiver program

To relocate through this program, you should:

Step 1: Make sure that you qualify for it

As I already said, you must have:

      • An offer from a Canadian employer.
      • At least 1 year of work experience.
      • At least a WAEC certificate.
      • Be able to speak English or French.
      • No criminal record.

Step 2: Get the job offer

      • An employer or a caregiver agency in Canada will offer you a position.
      • The job offer must be full-time (at least 30 hours per week).
      • You don’t need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
      • Even without the need for LMIA, the employer must meet Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conditions for hiring foreign workers.

Step 3: Apply for a work permit and permanent residence

With the offer, you can apply for your work permit. The permit allows you to come and work in Canada.

You can also apply for permanent residence at the same time – this is why this program is very cool, it gives you PR faster.

When you come to Canada and work for at least 24 months, your permanent residency application will be processed.

Step 4: Move to Canada

After getting your work permit, you can then travel to Canada and start working.

Step 5: Work for 24 months

You must work for 2 years (24 months) before you become a PR holder.

Step 6: Become a Permanent Resident

Once you complete the 24 months of work, you will send proof to IRCC, and then you and your family can become permanent residents of Canada.

If you want to move to Canada from Nigeria through the caregiver program, click here to read more about it and apply for it.

In addition, you can as well read more about the caregiver program here.

Which program is best for you between the Agri-Food Pilot and the Caregiver Programs?

Factor Caregiver Program Agri-Food Pilot
Job Type Childcare/Elderly Care Farming/Meat Processing
Work Experience Needed 24 months in Canada 12 months in Canada
Language (IELTS) Not necessary Not necessary
Education Post-secondary (1+ year) WAEC
PR Processing Time ~Few months ~Few months

Choose the caregiver program if:

  • You know that you can take care of children or elderly people (nanny, elderly care).

Choose the Agri-Food pilot program if:

  •  You know that you can work in a farm or food processing factory

Between the two of them, the Agri-Food Pilot program is faster – it is the one many Nigerians are following.

Most of the people I know who have migrated to Canada from Nigeria through the Agri-Food Pilot did so because it’s faster and they want to work in a food processing factory where workers are allowed to eat the factory food during breaks.

Tips on applying to migrate to Canada from Nigeria

  • Anyone you want to migrate through, make sure you start applying early.
  • If you have written WAEC, it is enough to prove that you understand the English language.
  • If you have any form of work experience here in Nigeria, it will even be faster to migrate to Canada now through any of the two programs

Both ways can get you to Canada with your family and you can start a new life. Don’t go for the two programs at once, pick the one that fits you best.

After the Canadian government made changes to the requirements of these two programs, many people are now moving to Canada from Nigeria through these two programs.

You can be one of them if you follow the instructions here and submit your application. As I already said don’t say someone you know tried it and it didn’t work for the person, it can work for you.

The fact that it didn’t work for someone you know does not mean it won’t work for you.  Follow the steps we explained here and apply for at least one of the programs, there is no harm in trying.

Good luck with your application.
