How many times can I visit Canada in one year

How many times can I visit Canada in one year

If you have visited Canada before, you’ll understand when I say the country has the “come again” pull.

Canada has this magical way of pulling you in with its breathtaking attractions, vibrant cities, and incredibly welcoming people.

This is why, once you’ve visited, the thought of returning is almost irresistible.

It has happened to me severally, you go there and when you’re back, you just feel like going again.

The country has everything to wow you, however, there are entry rules including the number of times you can visit in a year.

And, if you want to visit the country many times a year like I want to, you should know how many times you’ll be allowed to visit.

How many times can I visit Canada in one year?

When I first started visiting Canada, I found myself wanting to return as often as possible, and maybe you’re feeling the same way.

The good news is, that you can visit Canada as many times as you like in one year, as long as your visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is still valid.

There’s no set limit on the number of times you can enter, but keep in mind that each time you visit, you must follow the conditions of your visa or eTA.

If, like me, you want to make multiple trips without the hassle of getting a new visa each time, applying for a multiple-entry visa is the way to go.

This type of visa allows you to visit Canada as often as you want, as long as the visa is valid.

It’s a great option if you can’t get enough of Canada and want the freedom to come and go as you please.

However, if you’re issued a single-entry visitor visa, it’s a different story.

This type of visa only allows you one entry, so once you leave, you’ll need to apply for a new visa if you want to visit again.

Except if you’re heading straight to the United States (including its Territories and Possessions) or St. Pierre and Miquelon.

Canada, much like a welcoming friend, is always open to visitors, but how often you can visit and for how long depends on the visa you hold.

There’s no official cap on the number of entries in a year.

If you love Canada as much as I do, you’re welcome to visit many times a year.

If you’re holding a multiple-entry visa, you’re in luck.

Aside from the flexibility to come as many times as you like, the visa is always valid for a longer period.

Just remember, whether you’re on a single-entry or multiple-entry visa, respect the terms of your visa.

Situations where you need a single-entry visa:

While a multiple-entry visa sounds great, you’ll need a single-entry visa if

  • You don’t have to pay the visa fee and you’re visiting Canada for a limited purpose, like an official visit.
  • You’re coming to Canada for a one-time special event. For example, if you have an event that only takes place once a year, you don’t need to get a multiple-entry visa; a single-entry visa will be just fine.
  • If there are special rules for people from your country.

You can still enter many times a year even with a single-entry visa

Okay, I know this sounds like the opposite of what I said above but hold on. Below is what I mean this time.

To visit Canada many times a year with a single-entry visa, you’ll apply for and get as many single-entry visas as you enter the country.

Usually, after you leave Canada with a single entry visa, you’ll need a new visa to visit again.

So, once you get a single-entry visa and enter Canada, after your mission in the country, you can apply for another single-entry visa the next time you want to visit within the same year.

I have entered Canada 3 times within one year, all with single entry visas.

After my first visit, I got another visa when I visited the second time and got a third visa when I also visited the third time.

Can I leave and re-enter Canada on a visitor visa?

Absolutely! As long as your visitor visa is valid, you can leave Canada and return as often as you like.

However, for each entry, you must meet all entry requirements.

And, of course, staying within the terms of your visa is important if you want to avoid any issues with the Canadian immigration authorities.

In the last few years that I have frequented Canada, I haven’t played with the conditions of my visa.

Obeying it to the least ensures you remain a friend of the country!

How long do you have to wait between visits to Canada?

Here’s where it gets interesting: there’s no set waiting period between visits. If you’re on a multiple-entry visa, you can come and go as you please within the visa’s validity period.

But, if you’re on a single-entry visa, you’ll need to wait until your next visa is approved before you can return.

There were times I waited up to 2 months after a visit before I applied for another visa.

It all depends on why you’re going to Canada and how often you need to be there.

Can I stay in Canada for 6 months then leave and come back?

Yes, you can! With a tourist visa, you’re allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months per visit. After that, you can leave and return. This way, you’ll enjoy an extended visit to Canada – a win-win for everyone.

Just be sure to comply with your visa terms to keep everything smooth.

What is the maximum amount of time I can stay in Canada with a tourist visa?

The length of your stay in Canada on a tourist visa is directly tied to the validity of the visa. If your visa is valid for one month, that’s how long you can stay. If it’s valid for a shorter period, say seven days, then you can only stay 7 days in Canada.

However, most tourist visas allow you to stay for up to six months per visit.

A friend once obtained a multiple-entry visa, and within the 6 months of its validity, he visited Canada only twice and stayed a combined total of 4 months and 3 days.

With that, you have enough time to enjoy the country.

If you want to extend your stay at the end of your visa validity, you can.

To do that, contact the Canadian immigration authorities.

What happens if you stay longer than 6 months in Canada?

If your visa allows you to stay for six months and you decide to stretch that a bit longer, you’ll overstay and that violates your visa conditions.

Overstaying can lead to your visa being cancelled, and it will make it difficult, if not impossible, for you to get another visa in the future.

Canadian immigration officers are pretty strict about these rules.

If they catch you overstaying, they won’t hesitate to send you back home, and they’ll even ban you from returning for a while.

And yes, breaking these visa rules can also get you fined or charged – not the kind of souvenir you want to take home.

So, if you’re approaching that six-month mark and feel like you need more time, make sure you apply for an extension before your current visa runs out.

Trust me, it’s better to play by the rules than try to play the system and get caught.

How soon can someone return to Canada after their 6-month visa has expired?

There’s no mandatory waiting period. You can return as soon as you secure a new visa. The timing of your return depends entirely on what brings you back to Canada.

Final words

The number of times you can visit Canada in one year depends on the type of visitor visa issued to you and the purpose of your visit.

If you’re like me who loves to visit many times, get a multiple-entry visitor visa. With it, you can enter Canada many times as long as it’s valid.
