How long can you stay in the UK after your student visa expires?

A few years ago, during a 3-month course in the UK, the program ran longer than planned, and I faced the risk of overstaying my visa.

Knowing the consequences, I left the UK as extending my stay wasn’t possible.

The UK immigration authorities expect all visa holders, including students, to leave the country before their visa expires.

Therefore, if you want to stay in the country after your student visa expires, see what the rules say.

How long can you stay in the UK after your student visa expires?

You cannot stay in the UK after your student visa expires. If you do, you’re overstaying your visa and will face serious consequences, like being banned from re-entering the UK, trouble getting future visas, or even deportation.

To avoid these issues, you either apply for an extension or leave the UK before your visa runs out.

Is there a grace period for a student visa in the UK?

The UK does not offer a grace period after your student visa expires. Upon its expiration, you must leave the country unless you’ve applied for an extension or a switch to another visa category.

Although, after your program ends, you usually have a few months to remain in the UK as a legal resident.

This period allows you time to either prepare to leave or extend your stay.

Even though your program has ended, your visa is still valid during this time, and authorities expect you to finalize your plans – whether that’s leaving the UK or legally extending your stay.

How many months can you stay after your course ends in the UK?

If your course lasts 12 months or more, you can stay for four additional months.

For courses between 6 and 12 months, you have two months.

Pre-sessional courses allow for a 1-month stay, while courses shorter than 6 months provide just 7 days.

During this period, your visa is still valid but will expire afterwards.

You’re expected to use this time to either pack up and leave the UK or apply for an extension if you have a valid reason to stay.

Additionally, you can apply for a different visa if you’re eligible for one in the UK.

Take this extended months after the end of your course as your grace period, a time you must decide your fate.

What happens if you finish your course earlier than expected?

If you finish your course earlier than expected, your university/college will inform the Home Office that you have completed your course and the Home Office will adjust your visa expiration date to an earlier date.

You will be informed of this adjustment.

It means you have to leave the country earlier than previously stated in your visa.

Instead of the old date, you are now required to leave the country on the new expiration date of your visa.

Overstaying this period (the expiring date of your student visa) has serious consequences.

What happens if you overstay your student visa in the UK?

When you overstay your student visa in the UK, you’ll lose your student status, and become an illegal resident of the country, this means you have lost the right to:

  • Work
  • Study
  • Access public healthcare
  • And, be in the country

If you’re caught, you’ll be:

  • Fined: You can be fined for staying longer than stated in your student visa.
  • Banned: If you stay beyond 30 days after your visa has expired, you’ll receive a re-entry ban of 1 to 10 years, depending on your circumstances.
  • Deported: If you fail to leave voluntarily when asked to, the authorities will deport you back to your home country.

In addition, you won’t be able to get future visas to the UK.

Overstaying will hurt your chances of getting a visa to the UK in the future.

The UK government takes overstaying seriously, and it will be a black mark on your immigration record.

Even if you overstay for a short period, it’ll affect you later when you want to apply for a visa to the UK.

You’ll be refused entry to the country.

What happens at the end of a student visa?

At the end of a student visa, you are generally expected to leave the country unless you have applied for an extension or a new visa.

If eligible, you can apply for a post-study work visa or another type of visa to remain in the country.

If you take no action and allow your visa to expire, then you have to leave the country.

Upon completing your studies, take the extra few months to either apply for and process a post-study work visa (if you want to stay) or leave.

How long can I stay in the UK without a student visa?

You can’t stay in the UK without a student visa if you enter the country as a student.

If you want to stay in the UK, you must have a valid student visa or legal permission to be in the UK as a student.

How can you extend your stay in the UK beyond your current visa?

To extend your stay in the UK beyond your current visa, apply for another visa type or extend your current visa:

  • Extend your current visa: If you’re in the UK on a student visa type that allows extensions (e.g., Tier 4 Student Visa), and you have a valid reason to extend your visa, submit an application for an extension.
  • You can switch visa categories: If you’re eligible for another visa category like a work visa or family visa, you can switch to a different visa category without leaving the UK.

When does my student visa expire in the UK?

Your UK student visa expires at the end of your course, along with an additional period granted to give you time to explore your next steps.

To know when your student visa will expire, check your visa sticker or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) that you received when your visa was granted.

Your visa expiration date is clearly stated on these documents.

If you can’t find it there, you can also check your visa status online through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) website.

You’ll need your visa reference number to do this.
