If you have been accepted to study in the UK and obtained your student visa, you’re expected to enter the country early, for your program.

And, here’s how early you can enter.

How early can you enter the UK on a student visa?

If your course is 6 months or less, you can enter the UK as early as 1 week before the start of your course but if your course lasts more than 6 months, you can enter the UK as early as 1 month before the start of your course.

Arriving in the UK before your program starts gives you enough time to find accommodation and settle in (on time) for your studies.

Below is a table showing different program lengths and how early you can enter the UK.

You’ll find your program start date on your confirmation of enrollment (COE) which you’ll receive after accepting your admission offer.

In some schools, you’ll receive your COE after paying part or all of your first-year tuition fee.

This early entry provision (1 month before the start of your program) enables you to settle in, find accommodation, attend orientation programs, and adjust to your new environment before your classes start.

Is there a specific date I must enter the UK for my studies?

There is no specific date to enter the UK for your program, for some, there will be entrance conditions attached to their visa specifying when they’ll enter the country.

Others will not have this condition and therefore, can enter the country for their studies at any point after receiving their visa.

When your visa is approved, and your passport returned to you, check the conditions specified on your visa vignette or biometric residence permit (BRP) – it contains every detail regarding your entrance to the UK.

  • For a 6-month or less course, you can enter the UK up to 1 week before your course start date.

Exit Timing:

  • After your course ends, you can stay in the UK for additional periods. The length of your stay depends on the length of your program:
    • If your course lasts 12 months or more, you can stay an additional 4 months after your course ends.
    • If your course lasts between 6 and 12 months, you can stay an additional 2 months after your course ends.
    • If your course lasts less than 6 months, you can stay for an additional 7 days after your course ends.

Travel during your studies:

  • You can travel outside the UK only if your student visa and passport are valid (you need them for re-entry).

Always carry proof of your student status when travelling around or out of the UK.
