What's a Visa?
A visa is an official travel document that allows a foreign national to enter a country for a particular reason, like tourism, work, or study, and stay for a specified time.
To get a visa, you have to apply, submit all the necessary documents, and wait for the issuing country’s immigration authorities to approve your visa.
Due to differing immigration rules and country-specific relationships, some countries allow travellers from listed countries to get a visa on arrival.
In other cases, travellers are exempted from getting a visa, they’re allowed entrance visa-free.
When approved, visas are generally affixed to your passport and will show details about your stay, like the length of your stay in the host country.
Before your application for a visa is approved, you must meet the requirements of the visa type you’re applying for.
Countries impose these requirements to manage immigration, maintain national security, and control who enters their borders.
With this, they make sure that only those who meet entry requirements are allowed in.
What is contained in a visa?
A visa is a sticker or stamp placed on your passport, which contains information about your trip. On it, you’ll find information like:
- Your name
- Photograph
- Passport Number
- And the duration of your stay
Not all visas will be attached to your passport; some are issued as a separate document like the e-Visas.

Visa Categories
Visas come in different types, the one you need is determined by the purpose of your visit:
- Visa by Purpose (Tourism, Work, Study, Business, etc.)
- Visa by Duration (Short-term, Long-term, Permanent Residency)
- Visa by Applicant Type (Student, Worker, Tourist, Family, Investor)
- Visa by Process (Express, Standard, Premium Processing)

- Visa by Immigration Pathway (Temporary Stay, Permanent Residency, Citizenship)
Types of Visas by Purpose
Popular visa types include:
Tourist Visas
Tourist visas are popular, and they’re issued for travel purposes like leisure, tourism, or family visits. One of the characteristics of tourist visas is that they’re short-term and are often valid for up to three months. Furthermore, the visa prohibits the holder from engaging in any paid work. Some countries allow you to enter multiple times with your tourist visa as long as you comply with your visa regulations.
Medical Visas
If you’re seeking medical treatment in a foreign country, you’ll apply for this visa. Your application must come with proof of medical need plus a letter from a doctor and evidence of appointment in the destination country.
Transit Visas
Transit visas are issued to travellers passing through a country en route to another destination. If you are travelling from one country to another and have a layover in a third country, you’ll need a transit visa for the time spent in that country. One thing you need to know about this visa is that it’s short-term, usually for a few hours, like 24 to 48 hours.
Working Holiday Visas
A working holiday visa allows young people (usually those between 18 and 30 years old) to travel to another country for temporary employment. The main purpose of this visa is cultural exchange. However, you can work part-time to fund your stay.
Work Visas
Work visas are issued to foreigners who want to work in another country. These visas are generally longer-term, lasting one to four years, and are often tied to a specific employer or contract. With a work visa, you can secure permanent residency depending on the country’s immigration policies.
Student Visas
If you want to study abroad, this is the visa for you. Student visas are issued to foreign nationals enrolled in academic institutions abroad. Student visas are usually valid for the entire duration of the course or the program of study. In most countries, there will be an added time during which the bearer is expected to decide if they want to stay in the issuing country for other purposes like work, further their education or leave.
Family Reunification Visas
Family reunification visas allow the family members of persons working or living in a foreign country to join them. These visas are usually granted to spouses, children, or sometimes parents of the primary visa holder.
Investment Visas
This visa is offered to individuals who make significant financial investments in the issuing country, for example, if you’re buying property, starting a business, or making donations to government funds. With this visa, you can go on and become a resident or citizen.
Official Visas
Official visas are issued to government employees, diplomats, or anyone travelling for official state matters. This visa allows the holder to perform their diplomatic duties while in a foreign country.
Refugee or Asylum Visas
Refugee and asylum visas are issued to people fleeing persecution in their country. Persecution due to race, religion, nationality, or political opinion are all reasons to be issued this visa.
Digital Nomad Visas
This visa is for remote workers. It allows people who work remotely to live in a foreign country for a specified period while working for a company or freelance clients.
Retirement Visas
This visa is for anyone who wants to retire abroad. Before being issued, the applicant must prove that they have enough financial resources to support themselves in the country without needing to work.
Pilgrimage Visas
This visa is issued to those travelling for religious reasons, like going to Mecca for the Hajj pilgrimage.
How to apply for a visa
To get a visa, you can apply through the:
Embassy or Consulate application
The most common way to apply for a visa is to go through the embassy or consulate of the country you want to visit. To do this, you’ll apply together with the required sporting documents to the embassy and then wait for a decision to be made on your application.
Online Visa Application
This is a more convenient way to get a visa. In many countries, you’re allowed to apply for a visa online. In this case, you’ll submit your application through an online channel provided by the immigration authorities of the country you want to visit, pay the visa fee and wait for a decision on your application.
Visa on Arrival
In some countries, you’ll get a visa on arrival at a designated port of entry. When you arrive, you’ll pay the visa fee, complete other required paperwork and then be issued a visa. Visas on arrival are available only in specific countries and are limited to travellers from specific countries.
Visa-Free Travel
Surprisingly, you don’t need a visa to travel all the time. Because of the relationship between many countries, they have visa waiver agreements among themselves. This means that citizens and permanent residents of these countries can travel between the countries visa-free for short periods, usually for tourism or business purposes.
For example, Citizens of Western countries like the U.S., Canada, and EU member states can travel to different countries without needing a visa.
Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETAs)
This is a form of visa, but it’s not like the traditional visa. It’s an electronic authorization and is easier to get. You’ll find this in countries like Canada, the U.S., the UK, and Australia.
Joint Visa Schemes
Many countries have joint visa agreement that allows travellers to use a single visa to visit multiple countries within a specific region. A good example is the Schengen Visa for European countries and the Central American Single Visa, which covers Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Visa duration and validity
Visas have a validity period:
- Short-stay visa: Issued for a few days to a few months, often used for tourism, business, or medical visits.
- Long-stay visa: Valid for longer periods, like several months to years. Visas like work visas or study visas are good examples.
- Single-entry visa: Used to enter a country only once.
- Multiple-entry visa: Allows you to enter many times during its validity.
Common reasons for visa denial
Your visa application can be denied for reasons like:
- Not meeting passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
- Incomplete document: You must provide all required documents before you’re issued a visa.
- Criminal record: If you have a criminal record, you can be denied a visa.
- Travel ban: If you have been banned before, your new application will be refused.
- Security reasons: If you’re tagged a security threat to the country you plan to visit, your visa application will not be approved.
- Health issues: If you have a health challenge that threatens the well-being of the country you want to visit, your visa application will not be approved.
- Travel history: If you have a poor travel history or have overstayed a visa before, you’ll unlikely get a visa.
