After your visa is cancelled, the big question is why it was cancelled – the answer determines whether you’ll be allowed to apply again or not.

Why was your visa cancelled?

The reason plays a huge role in determining whether you can reapply. Common reasons why your visa can be cancelled include:

1. Violation of visa conditions

If you fail to follow your visa’s conditions.

It can be anything from overstaying your visa to working without authorization, your visa will be cancelled – If this was the cause, the road to reapplication will be tough.

You won’t be able to apply again because you’ll likely be banned temporarily or permanently.

2. Misrepresentation

This happens when you provide false information during your visa application.

Here, your visa will not only be cancelled but you’ll be banned – sometimes, for life.

When banned, you won’t be able to apply again.

A record of visa cancellation due to misrepresentation will hurt your ability to travel internationally.

3. Changes in circumstances

Changes in your situation can affect your visa status.

For example, if you’re on a student visa and you drop out, your visa will be cancelled, but you won’t be banned, therefore, you can apply again.

In addition, things like a sudden legal issue or health concerns can also lead to the cancellation of your visa.

In such cases, if you can prove that the situation has changed or been resolved, you can apply again.

4. Policy change

Sometimes, changes in immigration policies can affect your visa. When this happens, you’ll wait until a new policy is in place to apply again.

5. Administrative issues

In some cases, errors by immigration officials can lead to your visa being cancelled – in such a situation, you can apply again.

Furthermore, you can request the cancellation of your visa if you no longer need it.

I did this with my Australian visitor visa years ago, and it was simply cancelled with no ban or other consequences.

What happens after your visa is Cancelled?

Upon cancelling your visa, you’ll:

  • Lose your legal status: Once your visa is cancelled, you immediately lose your legal right to stay in the country. This means you no longer have the right to be in the issuing country. If you’re in the country at the point of cancelling your visa, you need to leave immediately.
  • Receive a notification and instructions: You’ll receive a visa cancellation notice from the immigration authorities. The notice will include the reason for the cancellation and instructions on when you must leave the country or be forced out.
  • Be detained or deported: If you’re still in the country after the graced period given to you to leave, you’ll be arrested, detained and deported back to your home country.

If your visa is cancelled and you’re still in the issuing country, it’s best to leave voluntarily.

Do not wait to be deported or forced out of the country.

Deportation is a red flag for future travels.

Here’s more:

A cancelled visa means that your visa status is null and void.

Cancellation is designed to end your permission to stay in the country, so simply reactivating the old visa isn’t an option.

If you wish to return to the country, you’ll apply for a new visa.

Impact of visa cancellation on future applications

i. Visa history: A visa cancellation will be recorded in your immigration history.

This record will negatively affect your ability to get visas in the future, either in the same country or elsewhere.

Immigration authorities often review past visa issues when processing new applications.

ii. Reapplication challenges: Depending on the reason for your visa cancellation, reapplying can be complicated.

For instance, if the cancellation was due to false information, you’ll face bans or restrictions.

If it was due to an oversight or a mix-up, you can reapply after addressing the issue.

iii. Loss of funds: When your visa is cancelled, you’ll incur financial losses like forfeited travel expenses, accommodation costs, or other investments tied to your planned stay.

How do you know if your visa is already cancelled?

If your visa is cancelled, you’ll know when you receive an official notification from the issuing country’s immigration authorities. In addition, you can also find out by checking your visa status online.

Canvisa be cancelled after approval?
